Hi, I am looking for beginers workshops in broken ceramic mosaic in the Albuquerque,Santa Fe area in New Mexico
I am a Canadian visual artist / educator interested in developing my skills in mosaics. I am looking for a intensive summer program /course (July – August 2012) that would give me a broader exposure to the world of mosaics and help develope my skills in all aspects of mosaic art. I have only taken one workshop over this past summer and very interested in developing my skills beyond the general interest -advancing towards personal and professional commercial mosaics. I am open to possibilities: volunteer assistant/ apprentice; study program or a combination. I am just eager to find some place where I can be exposed to traditional/ contempoary mosaic environment and have an opprotunity to develope- work on mosaics over the summer. I am currently teaching in Saudi Arabia and have the summers off (July to most of August, 2012)so am open to spending the summer anywhere as long as I am able to develope my mosaic skills.

I’ve been doing mosaics for about 2-1/2 yrs and decided to give courses the 1st year. I taught languages for a number of years so it came naturally to me to give the classes. I have a very small studio and can take a maximum of 5 students. I plan everything down to the last detail. Coffee & tea and perhaps some muffins when they arrive. Then I explain a little about the entire class and let them start a project. It’s better to not let students do anything they like in a beginner’s course. Mosaicing a flower pot is an easy way to start – they should be free to choose a design and colours but I find that it’s a good thing to show them what works with what – a little. Then a break for lunch and then grouting a piece in the afternoon. I have my books handy and printed photos of some interesting things to mosaic. The afternoon shouldn’t be too long – people get tired easily – finish by 3pm if you can. Also, students should pay at the beginning of the class and you should take down their telephone numbers and email addresses in case you want to give other courses or sell some stuff. Good luck !

I love this blog, all of your products and the beautiful work of many talented mosaic artists. I am currently working on a mosaic wall panel with children in grades 1-8. I need advice…what is the best adhesive to use for an indoor project…two 3 feet by 7 feet panels. Do I need to grout? I will be using a variety of materials…glass tiles, mirrored tile pieces, stained glass pieces, flat marbles…pebbles, etc. I would greatly appreciate your recommendation regarding the best non toxic adhesive to use for this project.

Here in Ottawa area Canada tempered glass is used on bus shelters. When glass is replaced from a shelter often glass is picked up by mosaic artist.
