The Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) invites artists working in mosaic media to submit applications to Mosaic Arts International(MAI) 2012. Held in conjunction with SAMA’s annual conference, the juried exhibit presents the best in contemporary mosaics from SAMA’s diverse international membership. Mosaic Arts International 2012 will be held March 1 – April 30, 2012 at The Lexington Center Museum and Gallery in Lexington, Kentucky. The newly renovated space is located in the heart of Lexington and is in the center of the Lexington Center Complex which also houses the Lexington Convention Center, a shopping center and Rupp Arena. Mosaic Arts International will be the first fine art exhibition featured in this gallery. Mosaic Arts International unites compelling materials, innovative design and masterful technique currently explored by a selection of the best international artists working in the medium. The Society of American Mosaic Artists is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, inspiring, and promoting excellence in mosaic arts.

Wall Mosaics – Mosaics that are mounted to a vertical flat surface that are 2 dimensional panels, bas relief panels, or wall sculptures.
Freestanding Mosaics – Mosaics that are sculptural or 3 dimensional in form that stand by themselves on a pedestal or floor surface.
Large Scale Mosaics – Mosaics in the Wall Mosaic and Freestanding Mosaic categories that are too large to be shipped or exhibited in a gallery and are not attached to a fixed structure or building. To be exhibited by photograph.
Architectural Mosaics – Mosaics that are permanently attached to a fixed structure or building that are typically a commission or public art. To be exhibited by photograph.

Yes, there has been a change of venue for Mosaic Arts International since we first announced we were headed to Lexington. We were presented with a golden opportunity to present MAI in a newly renovated space in Lexington Center that would allow the exhibition to be extended for a longer period and accomdate more work. The Queen Esther Mosaics of Lilian Broca

One of the most exquisite series of mosaics in contemporary art is celebrated in a newly released, lavishly illustrated large format book entitled The Hidden and the Revealed: The Queen Esther Mosaics of Lilian Broca. Published by Gefen Publishing House of Jerusalem and New York, the book marks the culmination of a journey that began in 2002 with the first completed work in the series.

In a stirring testament to the significance of Broca’s masterpiece, renowned American artist and feminist Judy Chicago writes in the book’s preface: “The Queen Esther Mosaics by Lilian Broca contribute to the vital historic task of what the biblical scholar Naomi Graetz called for in S/He Created Them: Feminist Retelling of Biblical Tales (Chapel Hill, NC: Professional Press, 1993): ‘…to put woman’s voice back where it should have been in the first place.’”

The ten monumentally sized works in the series retell the biblical story of Esther in dazzling detail, using the finest of Italian colored mosaic glass, plus gold leaf and other precious materials. The work won the prestigious Lorenzo de’ Medici medal at the 2003 Florence Biennale.

In addition to showcasing the spectacular mosaics, the book includes a chapter by art historian Sheila Campbell comparing Broca’s interpretation of the Esther story to that of other artists such as Rembrandt and Artemisia Gentileschi, and a highly evocative epic prose poem written in the voice of Esther by rabbi and scholar Yosef Wosk.

The book begins with Vancouver artist Broca’s own lively description of her emigration from war-torn Romania to Israel and ultimately to Canada. She goes on to reveal what led her to tell the story of Esther in the medium of mosaics, describing as well the meticulous process involved in using ancient artistic techniques with a contemporary sensibility. The book is rounded out with the full text of Esther in handsomely calligraphed Hebrew alongside an English translation.

Contributors

Artist Lilian Broca’s career has spanned three decades, including thirteen years teaching painting and drawing. A recipient of the 2003 Florence Biennale gold medal, her work has been featured in sixty-five exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Celebrated for her spirited exploration of contemporary societal issues in a variety of media, Broca draws on historical iconography, legends, and popular myths.

Archaeologist, art historian, and curator Sheila Campbell has published widely on ancient and contemporary mosaics and Byzantine art. A Professor Emerita at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto, she has curated many exhibitions, including a showcase of the Scuola di Mosaici (Friuli, Italy) at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Scholar, rabbi and former Simon Fraser University professor Yosef Wosk took inspiration from Broca’s mosaics to create a lyrical prose poem in the voice of Esther. The prose is accompanied by notes illuminating Wosk’s extensive investigation of biblical and mythological aspects of the Esther story.

“I was born in the country side of Japan. I was a child who loves drawing, reading, singing and talking. When my friends were studying I was daydreaming and when they were playing I was playing. I graduated from Seian University of Art and Design in Kyoto in 1988. My major was Fiber art, Textile art, and weaving, although I fell in love with Glass art while I was still in school, I never had a chance to work with it until very recently. Currently I am working as a mosaic artist in Santee, CA.”

The Grand Prize has been awarded to Julian Modica for his portrait, Frank Zappa. Modica will receive Euro 1,000 and a trip to Venice, Italy to attend a 1 week Master in Mosaic workshop at Orsoni.

Artist’s statement:
“In this work I combine different shades of primary colours together to create the colour of the skin. The interesting part of it is, how the eye of the spectator is re-organising the different colours to a unique colour.” 

The jurors, Lucio Orsoni, Honorary President – Angelo Orsoni and Pino Bisazza, President – Trend Group chose ‘Frank Zappa’ because of the artist’s exceptional success in “giving an extraordinary mosaic atmosphere through the choice of a subject which is certainly not ‘mosaic’”.

“Leaves are the most motivating theme for me. I balance cold and hot colors. Gold is very representative in my work, it means an inner glow and strength that I feel when I’m doing my mosaic. In this panel I used three types of Orsoni Gold tiles and seven different types of Orsoni Smalti.” 

Finalist, Erika Haaland was chosen for evoking “the feeling of autumn with the use of the smalti colours and the luminosity of gold mosaic” in Gold Leave. Erica V Haaland will receive 3 kilos of Orsoni 24 k gold mosaic.

Tracy Van Duinen was co-lead for the 2nd place 2009 Artprize entry Imagine That. He has recently completed Happiness Is for the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Lobby. Van Duinen, a Kendall College of Art & Design graduate, works in the Chicago Public Schools using public art to help urban teenagers connect with their community.

Todd Osborne is co-lead for Imagine That and Happiness is at the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. He has been teaching art on the South side of Chicago for the past six years. Osborne and Van Duinen have been working with inner-city youth to create large-scale multimedia murals on blighted underpasses and playgrounds all over Chicago.

Happiness Is ... What makes you happy? Hundreds of children helped artists Tracey VanDuinen and Todd Osbourne define happiness in this massive bricolage mural - the centerpiece of the lobby. The mural is 160 feet long and 19 feet high.

Phil Schuster is a sculptor with over 25 years experience in creating bas-relief sculptures and public art environments. Schuster has made innovative works involving communities of large scale, site-specific artworks. Schuster has made dozens of unique art installations, creating whimsical concrete gardens in urban spaces.

Title: Crucifixion

Art form: 2-D

Description of work: Having done works for four churches in the last two years, it was an honor to be asked to create the altarpiece for the new Saint Kilian’s Catholic church in Orange County, California. After experiencing construction delays, I decided to commence the work and enter the 9′ x 13′ stained glass mosaic into Artprize. I am very excited to share my first altarpiece with Grand Rapids.

I created this design by photographing my model in the woods of Santa Cruz, California, tied to a huge cross made of Home Depot beams, and wearing a crown of thorns crafted from a Michael’s wreath. By layering this imagery with two sunsets I photographed in Italy and Hawaii, I was able to compose the powerful light sources so relevant to this and all of my work. This “Crucifixion” took 2500 hours, is made of hand-cut stained glass, is attached to a custom wood structure and weighs 425 lbs. I drove Him across country by myself in two sections in a Penske truck.  Mia Tavonatti

Mia has studied, lived and exhibited extensively in the US, Italy, France and Greece, and her numerous art instructional books have been published in over 20 countries. Recently, Mia unveiled her monumental series of oil paintings on canvas at the ancient Museo Arsenale in Italy.

Mia has since returned to California and has formed the Svelata Foundation for the Arts and is currently producing the first Svelata World Tour. As a civilian Air Force Artist, Mia has enjoyed numerous adventures riding shotgun and documenting AF training missions including the 550th Search and Rescue teams at Kirtland AFB. and five days at Randolph AFB training for her first ride in a T38 supersonic jet trainer. Mia currently resides in California but is a native of Iron Mountain, MI.

Shields, Chief Curator of the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA will serve as the exhibit’s juror.

“I have long been intrigued by mosaics and am excited to see that the art form has expanded into something incredibly rich and diverse. I look forward to seeing how today’s mosaicists have pushed the art form to create new and artful ways of expressing themselves.”

Shields has curated numerous exhibitions and written catalogues for exhibitions such as those for ceramist Toshiko Takaezu and wood sculptor Robert Cremean. The Crocker Art Museum has one of the world’s finest ceramics collections. In 2012, it will host the International Academy of Ceramics Conference and Members’ Exhibition in its new 125,000 sq. ft. addition designed by Charles Gwathmey, FAIA.

Each individual work in Mosaic Art Now’s “Exhibition in Print” will receive a two-page spread in the 2010 edition of the magazine. Included in the layout will be a photograph of the entire mosaic, detail shots, and an artist’s statement.

“We know that the international mosaic community is producing truly great works of art,” said Founder and Editor Bill Buckingham. “At the magazine, we see these mosaics every day. This is our way of making sure that the rest of the world gets a chance to see them as well. We encourage accepted artists to provide us with pricing and contact information we can include in the magazine and website. We envision this as a cost effective format that will give artists international visibility.”

Mosaic Art Now is a high quality, four color annual magazine designed to promote contemporary mosaics and the artists who make them. This year, the magazine added a blog (http://MosaicArtNow.blogspot.com) and corresponding Facebook Page designed to keep mosaic artist and aficionados up to date on what’s happening in the art form. The Exhibit is one of a number of changes Mosaic Art Now is making that will further enhance the experience of readers, the representation of artists, and the perception of mosaics as an art form.
