‘Ram in a Thicket’ mosaic covered london museum on Flickr - davideferro
From Ur, southern Iraq, about 2600-2400 BC. This is one of an almost identical pair discovered by Leonard Woolley in the ‘Great Death Pit’, one of the graves in the Royal Cemetery at Ur. The other is now in the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia. It was named the ‘Ram in a Thicket’ by the excavator Leonard Woolley, who liked biblical allusions. In Genesis 22:13, God ordered Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, but at the last moment ‘Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son’.
mosaic covered Ram Ur, S. Iraq, on Flickr - davideferro
The ‘ram’ is more accurately described as a goat, and he reaches up for the tastiest branches in a pose often adopted by goats. Goats and sheep in the Near East were among the earliest animals to be domesticated. They were an everyday feature of agricultural life and are regularly depicted by artists in many different ways. The figure had been crushed flat by the weight of the soil and the wooden core had perished. Wax was used to keep the pieces together as it was lifted from the ground, and it was then pressed back into shape. The ram’s head and legs are covered in gold leaf, its ears are copper (now green), its twisted horns and the fleece on its shoulders are of lapis lazuli, and its body fleece is made of shell. Its genitals are gold. The tree is covered in gold leaf, with golden flowers, the whole supported on a small rectangular base decorated with a mosaic of shell, red limestone and lapis lazuli. British museum, London.

Mosaic Commemorative Panel, Shell Grotto, Margate on Flickr - AllieW
The Shell Grotto in Margate is an amazing little place. According to their literature, there are 4.6 million shells there and 20000 square feet of mosaic. The leaflet elaborates further:
“In 1835, Mr James Newlove lowered his young son Joshua into a hole in the ground that had appeared during the digging of a duckpond. Joshua emerged describing tunnels covered with shells. He had discovered The Shell Grotto, a series of passages leading to a rectangular chamber, its walls decorated with strange symbols mosaiced in millions of shells. Is it an ancient pagan temple? A meeting place for some secret cult? Nobody can explain who built this amazing place, or why, but since its accidental discovery visitors from all over the world have been intrigued by the beautiful mosaic and the unsolved mystery”.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli - “The Mosaic collection comprises portions of floor decorations and some wall decorations dating from the two centuries before Christ and up to 79 A.D., almost all of them from Pompei, Herculaneum and Stabiae. The majority are emblèmata, scenes with figures often derived from Greek paintings. On display are two scenes from the “new style comedy”, signed by Dioskourides of Samos, and the rich array of mosaics from the House of the Faun in Pompei, which includes the famous scene from a battle between Alexander the Great and the Persians under Darius. Also of particular interest are the three sectilia, rare examples of this technique of inlaying different coloured marbles in a slate base to depict figures.”

Perhaps one of the most beautiful mosaics of antiquity. With its tiny tesserae, it looks much like a painting. It is also widely photographed; there was actually a queue to photograph it the day I visited Herculaneum. I hope my photograph does it justice; it is a lovely piece. Scale is suggested by the bricks below and on either side of it.

mosaic from pompeii, great image to study facial structure in mosaic
“If one subscribed to Epicurean philosophy, this mosaic might be appropriate, since Epicureans considered death not an evil but a democratic reality for all human beings. This particular piece actually made up the top of table, as a reminder to diners and partiers to eat, drink and be merry lest they die tomorrow. ” for more info and the full image check out http://home.att.net/~b.b.major/identity.html about half way down page.

200 BC From the House of the Faun, Pompeii.
Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli
“In its entirety the mosaic measures 5.82 x 3.13m (19ft x 10ft 3in), and is made of around a million tesserae. It was discovered in the largest house in Pompeii, the House of the Faun, in a room overlooking the central peristyle garden of the house. It is thought that this house was built shortly after the Roman conquest of Pompeii, and is likely to have been the residence of one of Pompeii’s new, Roman, ruling class.
The mosaic highlights the wealth and power of the occupier of the house, since such grand and elaborate mosaics are extremely rare, both in Pompeii and in the wider Roman world.” source
It depicts the battle of Issus (333 BC) between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. Alexander defeated the Persian army, and his strength is clearly visible in the mosaic, which portrays Darius with a fearful facial expression.
Despite being partially ruined, the two main figures are easily recognizable. The portrait of Alexander is one of his most famous ones, and the whole scene is very vivid. Alexander’s breastplate depicts Medusa, the famous Gorgon.
Oxyathres, the brother of Darius, is seen sacrificing himself to save the King.

This house was off-limits to entry, but we could take pictures through the door. Notice the uneven, corrugated appearance of the atrium after the entry hall; the ground shifted at the time of the eruption. This is more apparent in the next picture. Also, note the swastika in the middle row of the patterns in the entryway; it was a good luck charm.
