Vancouver Community Artists - Richard Tetrault, Dan Bushnell & Jerry Whitehead
THE COMMUNITY WALLS / COMMUNITY VOICES project in east Vancouver demonstrates the way that art and community development work together to achieve complementary goals. Over 300 community members collaborated with artists to design, create, and install 28 ceramic mosaics, transforming a 170 m retaining wall from a run-down graffiti canvas into a work of public art that reflects east Vancouver’s diverse origins and highlights the area’s Aboriginal community. The mosaics portray the interests, history, and ambitions of the area’s diverse population and create a sense of community pride and identity. The process of creating the mosaics provided opportunities for social cohesion by bringing together diverse groups to work on the project. Since the installation of the mosaics, graffiti on the retaining wall has stopped.

Mosaic Artist - Ellen Blakeley
“In 1993 I developed my shattered glass technique. I use recycled safety glass (tempered glass) as a form of mosaic. With paint, words, photographs, leaves, metallic powders and an endless supply of other materials, I create a drawing or collage beneath the surface of the glass. Like a body of water, glass can keep your eye on the surface as it reflects the light, or invite your eye below the surface when it absorbs the light. The play of surface and depth is a game I never get tired of. In the past nine years, I have used the technique for: walls, floors, windows, chandeliers, countertops, backsplashes, tables, bowls, mirrors, garden rocks, coasters, bases, sculptures, and large outdoor murals.”

As part of the Mesa Conference SAMA member Kim Emerson led two workshops on large-scale architectural mosaics.
Participating SAMA members fabricated a series of five panels (designed by Kim) in a fun-filled mosaic marathon! They utilized Kim’s method of face-taping the design and thinsetting it to panels. The finished panels were then donated to the Southwest Human Development, a not-for-profit organization with the mission of creating a positive future for young children. The mosaic panels were mounted on the exterior wall of SWHD’s four-story building in Phoenix, Arizona.

Nahum Gutman mosaic history of Tel Aviv (on Bialik Street) on Flickr - by לורנס לויתן
Who was Nahum Gutman?
Nahum Gutman (1898–1980) was an Israeli painter, sculptor and author born in what is now Teleneşti, Moldova, then part of the Russian Empire. In 1903, he and his parents moved to Odessa; in 1905, they emigrated to Israel.
Gutman helped pioneer a distinctively Israeli style, different from the European models of his teachers. He was quite eclectic as an artist, working in oils, watercolours, gouache, sculpture, mosaics, and engravings. His work varied between literal and abstract, and he also wrote and illustrated a number of highly successful children’s books and short stories.

Shalom Meir Tower (Hebrew: מגדל שלום מאיר, Migdal Shalom Meir; commonly shortened to מגדל שלום, Migdal Shalom) is an office tower in Tel-Aviv which contains a small commercial center. Shalom Meir tower was the first magnificent and tall tower to be built in Israel and when its construction was completed, it rivaled the tallest buildings in Europe in height, and was the tallest in the Middle East. It has 34 floors and stands at a height of 142 m (466 ft), it was completed in 1965.

Nahum Gutman (1898-197
was born in Romania and immigrated to Israel in 1905. He grew up in Jaffa, opposite the sand dunes (later to become Tel Aviv), and these locations dominate his landscapes. He was one of the first children to live in the new city of Tel Aviv, and this influential childhood experience is reflected in his books A Small City with Few People and Between Sands and Blue Skies. He became known as prolific children’s book author, and illustrator. His works earned him the title “the artist of early Tel Aviv” seeing as he had a knack for portraying the bohemian and realistic vision of the city and its people. Gutman is also famous for his illustration of Bialik poems and for mosaics he designed in Tel Aviv: in the Shalom Tower, the Chief Rabbinate Building, and the old City Plaza, Bialik Square. They were created in 1970 and they tell the story of the daily life in Tel Aviv and Jaffa. After his death the Nahum Gutman Museum was founded. It is located in what is considered Tel Aviv’s first Jewish neighborhood, Neve Tzedek. The Mosaic in the western wing of the Shalom Tower tells us of the beginning of the city. The mosaic is divided in four different colors each representing a period in the life of the city. Holiday in Israel

Who was Louisa Lawson?
Louisa Lawson (February 17, 1848 - August 12, 1920) was an Australian writer, publisher, suffragist, and feminist. Louisa Lawson was born and grew up in Mudgee, New South Wales. Her family was poor and as the eldest daughter of nine, she was forced to leave school at the age of thirteen. In 1866 Louisa married Niels Larsen (Peter Lawson); her husband was often absent leaving Louisa to raise four children on her own. In 1882 she took her children and moved to Sydney. She managed boarding houses and saved money that she used to buy a share in the radical pro-federation newspaper The Republican in 1887. With her earnings and experience from working on The Republican she was able in May 1888, to edit and publish The Dawn.
The Dawn was Australia’s first journal produced solely by women; it was published monthly and distributed throughout Australia and overseas. The Dawn had a strong feminist perspective, and discussed issues such as the women’s right to vote and assume public office, women’s education, women’s economic and legal rights, domestic violence, and temperance. The Dawn was published monthly for seventeen years (1888 - 1905) and at its height employed 10 female staff. Her son Henry Lawson also wrote poems and stories for the paper. The Dawn press printed Henry’s first book Short Stories in Prose and Verse in 1894.

Who was Tonantzin?
In Aztec mythology, Tonantzin was a lunar mother goddess. Like Tlaltecuhtli, she was sometimes depicted as a toad swallowing a stone knife.
In modern Mexico, the most important religious building (Basilica of Guadalupe) is built where the Tonantzin pyramid once stood. Some anthropologists believe that “Our Lady of Guadalupe” is a “Christianized” Tonantzin.
In literature, Tonantzin is the tragic heroine in Palomar by Gilbert Hernandez, who makes a living from selling deep fried babosas (giant slugs) in her Central American village. She is cited as being named after the goddess

In 2005, I participated in a mural building project with famed Philadelphia artist, Isaiah Zagar at the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland, CA.. The event was held in conjunction with Laurel True’s opening of this fantastic institute in Oakland’s Jingletown Arts District where world-class mosaic art is taught and displayed. - Stacy Alexander

Isaiah Zagar received his BFA from Pratt Institute of Art in New York in painting and graphics. He has been working on a city wide mosaic environment for 35 years in Philadelphia, PA and is considered a visionary outside of the traditional art world. He has completed over 70 large scale installations and has exhibited his work internationally.
“In 1959 when I was 19 years old I was introduced to the folk art environment of Clarence Schmidt, My Mirrored Hope, Woodstock, NY USA. Soon after in 1960 there was a groundbreaking exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, NY USA. Because that exhibition included assemblages of artists like Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet, Curt Schwitters, Antonio Gaudi along side of untrained brickaleurs Clarence Schmit, Simon Rodia and Joseph Ferdinand Cheval that gave me as a trained artist the rationale to include their concepts as manifestations of fine art. At a crucial time in my life it allowed me to begin what could be called a life’s work making the city of Philadelphia PA USA into a labyrinthine mosaic museum that incorporates all my varied knowledge and skills.” Institute of Mosaic Art

- m.a.s. any advice for artists interested in working on large scale mosaic projects with children?
- Josef The most important part of any kids project is to form a strong partnership with the adults involved. Be careful of volunteers – they’re great if they show up – but don’t count on them. Work with small groups of kids, usually not more than 6 at a time.
