From Ur, southern Iraq, about 2600-2400 BC. This is one of an almost identical pair discovered by Leonard Woolley in the ‘Great Death Pit’, one of the graves in the Royal Cemetery at Ur. The other is now in the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia. It was named the ‘Ram in a Thicket’ by the excavator Leonard Woolley, who liked biblical allusions. In Genesis 22:13, God ordered Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, but at the last moment ‘Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son’.

The ‘ram’ is more accurately described as a goat, and he reaches up for the tastiest branches in a pose often adopted by goats. Goats and sheep in the Near East were among the earliest animals to be domesticated. They were an everyday feature of agricultural life and are regularly depicted by artists in many different ways. The figure had been crushed flat by the weight of the soil and the wooden core had perished. Wax was used to keep the pieces together as it was lifted from the ground, and it was then pressed back into shape. The ram’s head and legs are covered in gold leaf, its ears are copper (now green), its twisted horns and the fleece on its shoulders are of lapis lazuli, and its body fleece is made of shell. Its genitals are gold. The tree is covered in gold leaf, with golden flowers, the whole supported on a small rectangular base decorated with a mosaic of shell, red limestone and lapis lazuli. The Shell Grotto in Margate is an amazing little place. According to their literature, there are 4.6 million shells there and 20000 square feet of mosaic. The leaflet elaborates further:
“In 1835, Mr James Newlove lowered his young son Joshua into a hole in the ground that had appeared during the digging of a duckpond. Joshua emerged describing tunnels covered with shells. He had discovered The Shell Grotto, a series of passages leading to a rectangular chamber, its walls decorated with strange symbols mosaiced in millions of shells. Is it an ancient pagan temple? A meeting place for some secret cult? Nobody can explain who built this amazing place, or why, but since its accidental discovery visitors from all over the world have been intrigued by the beautiful mosaic and the unsolved mystery”.

Sergei Parajanov
Who was Sergei Parajanov?
One of the 20th century’s greatest masters of cinema Sergei Parajanov was born in Georgia to Armenian parents and it was always unlikely that his work would conform to the strict socialist realism that Soviet authorities preferred. After studying film and music, Parajanov became an assistant director at the Dovzhenko studios in Kiev, making his directorial debut in 1954, following that with numerous shorts and features, all of which he subsequently dismissed as “garbage”. However, in 1964 he was able to make Tini zabutykh predkiv (1964), a rhapsodic celebration of Ukrainian folk culture, and the world discovered a startling and idiosyncratic new talent.
He followed this up with the even more innovative Sayat Nova (196
(which explored the art and poetry of his native Armenia in a series of stunningly beautiful tableaux), but by this stage the authorities had had enough, and Paradjanov spent most of the 1970s in prison on almost certainly rigged charges of “homosexuality and illegal trafficking in religious icons”. However, with the coming of perestroika, he was able to make two further films before succumbing to cancer in 1990. Sergei Parajanov - Biography
Parajanov: The Last Spring
In December of 1973, the Soviet government arrested Parajanov and sentenced him to five years in hard labor camps. A large group of world-famous artists, filmmakers and activists protested and Parajanov was released, but only after having served four horrific years in the Soviet penal system. Poet Louis Aragon’s petition to the Soviet government was instrumental in securing Parajanov’s release. Parajanov returned to Tbilisi, but the regime continued to keep him away from cinema.

This was taken on my way back from the city centre this afternoon. This heart shaped mosaic is known as the ‘Heart of Midlothian’ and sits outside St Giles Cathedral, marking the location of the 15th century Tolbooth prison (which was one of several sites of public execution). It had been raining heavily minutes before, but suddenly the sun came out.

Who is Fabrice?
Fabrice is one of the true street art pioneers in Amsterdam, he was doing figurative art in the streets back in the late 70s.
Here he’s working on an impressive mosaique at Heineken Plein, ‘Het Kompas’. It symbolizes the world itself and is a working compass guiding you north, south, east & west. The figures tell a story about each geographical direction.
