Poseidon and Amphitrite, originally uploaded by Pachelbel Canon.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful mosaics of antiquity. With its tiny tesserae, it looks much like a painting. It is also widely photographed; there was actually a queue to photograph it the day I visited Herculaneum. I hope my photograph does it justice; it is a lovely piece. Scale is suggested by the bricks below and on either side of it.

Fantastic detail for mosaic portrait study…
“The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis houses the largest single collection of mosaic art anywhere in the world, created by 20 different artists and covering 83,000 square feet. The installation, containing 41.5 million pieces of glass tessare employing over 7,000 colors, began in 1912 and was completed in 1988.” http://www.archstl.org/info/index.htm
