I am honored to present Mosaic Art Source’s First Featured Mosaic Artist, Lilian Broca!

Lilian is an established visual artist who has returned to mosaics recently to express her Queen Esther series in a form true to the period and her own vision. Lilian’s Solo Exhibition “The Queen Esther Series - The Hidden and The Revealed” will be at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery in Toronto until November 7th, 2006.

The entire “Queen Esther Series” has been presold and is no doubt Canada’s largest mosaic art sale to a private collector. Congratulations Lilian!!!! If you are in the area don’t miss this exhibition, it may be the first and last time the whole series is shown publicly.

Queen Esther holding evidence of Hamen’s Guilt - copyright 2006 Lilian Broca

It happened at the 2002 SAMA conference, Opus Veritas: Fragments of Truth, in San Francisco.  Lilian Broca’s “Queen Esther Holding Evidence of Haman’s Guilt” was the first mosaic I saw upon entering the exhibit and my jaw literally dropped!  I had never seen such an exquisite contemporary mosaic and found myself staring in awe… Queen Esther was absolutely stunning!

Suddenly, I was caught up in a wave of people & found myself right next to this extraordinary mosaic and the artist herself.  Thrilled to realize I was about to meet this amazing woman (whose work was truly worthy of worship), I also found myself incredibly intimidated…  But Lilian is such a wonderfully gracious woman, who shares her mosaic passion so freely that I felt at ease instantly.  Incredibly, we found that we live only 10 minutes from one another in Vancouver, BC Canada!

Lilian left San Francisco with 1st prize in the two dimensional category and I left with a wonderful new friend whose work inspires me everyday!

The bowl is an example of Chihuly’s fabulously distinctive style. I know it’s not mosaic but if you’re into glass & in the area don’t miss this exhibit… http://www.mobot.org/chihuly/  his installations are mind blowing & it’s been held over til Jan.1 2007!

a bit from Dale Chihuly’s bio:

“A prodigiously prolific artist whose work balances content with an investigation of the material’s properties of translucency and transparency, Chihuly began working with glass at a time when reverence for the medium and for technique was paramount.  A student of interior design and architecture in the early 1960s, by 1965 he had become captivated by the process of glassblowing.  He enrolled in the University of Wisconsin’s hot glass program, the first of its kind in the United States, established by Studio Glass movement founder Harvey K. Littleton.  After receiving a degree in sculpture, Chihuly was admitted to the ceramics program at the Rhode Island School of Design, only to establish its renowned glass program, turning out a generation of recognized artists…”

“Seventy years ago, East 11th Street was Austin’s mecca for jazz. Amateur groups played at local parks on weekend afternoons, and legends Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Ornette Coleman played at eastside venues like Charlie’s Playhouse and the Cotton Club. Those great jazz joints may be a thing of the past, but the brass is alive again on the east side. It bursts forth in “Rhapsody,” a vivid and intricate mosaic mural by artist John Yancey.”

Kid Serve is an arts education program guiding students age 6-18 through the design and creation of permanent outdoor murals in their communities. The 8 and 14 week projects integrate social justice, creativity and community service and empowers young people to take a leadership role in beautifying and transforming their neighborhoods.

Kid Serve Supervising Artist & Director is Josef Norris

Thanks for the info Josef, you’re doing such wonderful work with these children! I thought there may have been a little of the Isaiah Zagar mosaic influence in there, your murals are so much fun… ;o) Wish we could start something like this up here in Canada! I’ve included your comments in this post cause for some reason the comments are not showing up in the regular format…

Hi -
Thanks for posting my mural! You had a question about Kid Serve -
here goes…
I’ve been running Kid Serve Youth Murals for 7 years. We do mural residenc ies in San Francisco and Oakland public schools. I’ll usually work with a class for a semester (14 weeks) and guide the kids (age 4 - 1 8) through the process of designing and creating an outdoor mural in their community. We’ve done about 50 of these so far.

I started out as a painter - and then met Isaiah Zagar in Philadelphia in 2002. After working with him for a couple of days I’ve been doing mosaics ever since. Another former Isaiah student Laurel True is based in Oaland and has set up the Mosaic Institute of Oakland - a great resource for mosaic artists in this part of the country.

Thanks again for your interest.

Josef
