The detail in this one was amazing. It was so surreal walking around Pompeii and wandering into all the buildings still standing after 2000 years.

Italy. Pompeii Tile Mosaic, 1/2 inch tiles; National Museum of Archeology, Naples
The Naples National Museum mosaic collection “comprises portions of floor decorations and some wall decorations dating from the two centuries before Christ and up to 79 A.D., almost all of them from Pompei, Herculaneum and Stabiae. The majority are emblèmata, scenes with figures often derived from Greek paintings. On display are two scenes from the “new style comedy”, signed by Dioskourides of Samos, and the rich array of mosaics from the House of the Faun in Pompei, which includes the famous scene from a battle between Alexander the Great and the Persians under Darius. Also of particular interest are the three sectilia, rare examples of this technique of inlaying different coloured marbles in a slate base to depict figures.”

200 BC From the House of the Faun, Pompeii.
Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli
“In its entirety the mosaic measures 5.82 x 3.13m (19ft x 10ft 3in), and is made of around a million tesserae. It was discovered in the largest house in Pompeii, the House of the Faun, in a room overlooking the central peristyle garden of the house. It is thought that this house was built shortly after the Roman conquest of Pompeii, and is likely to have been the residence of one of Pompeii’s new, Roman, ruling class.
The mosaic highlights the wealth and power of the occupier of the house, since such grand and elaborate mosaics are extremely rare, both in Pompeii and in the wider Roman world.” source
It depicts the battle of Issus (333 BC) between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. Alexander defeated the Persian army, and his strength is clearly visible in the mosaic, which portrays Darius with a fearful facial expression.
Despite being partially ruined, the two main figures are easily recognizable. The portrait of Alexander is one of his most famous ones, and the whole scene is very vivid. Alexander’s breastplate depicts Medusa, the famous Gorgon.
Oxyathres, the brother of Darius, is seen sacrificing himself to save the King.

This house was off-limits to entry, but we could take pictures through the door. Notice the uneven, corrugated appearance of the atrium after the entry hall; the ground shifted at the time of the eruption. This is more apparent in the next picture. Also, note the swastika in the middle row of the patterns in the entryway; it was a good luck charm.
