The Niki in the Garden exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens is definitely worth the trouble for Atlanta guests and residents. Was really impressed with it during our visit yesterday. This is detail from her sculpture called Miles Davis.

“Located in south Los Angeles, in a community known as Watts, stands a monument to one man’s spirit, ingenuity, and determination. Built single-handedly by Simon Rodia over a period of 33 years, the Watts Towers consists of nine major sculptural forms made of steel and covered with mortar embedded with pieces of ceramic tile, pottery shards, sea shells, and broken glass. The tallest tower is nearly 100 feet high and contains the longest slender column of reinforced concrete in the world.” http://www.arts.ufl.edu/art/rt_room/watts/tower.html

The Ascension Dome inside St. Mark’s Basilica, covered in 13th century gold mosaics depicting the New Testament. Each color is a micro-tile about the size of a pinky nail. There are literally millions of these tiles on every surface of the Basilica.

Basilica Mosaic… now with Bacon!, originally uploaded by moknits.

This is the best mosaic on the Basilica. It depicts how the Venetians stole the body of St. Mark out of Egypt. Legend has it that they put it in a basket (see the basket on the lower right?) full of bacon. Since the Muslims were anti-bacon (see the men in turbans holding their noses and turning away?), they didn’t inspect the basket too closely, and the Venetians were able to make off with the body. See them carrying the body away on the far right?

Hey, I didn’t write the tale, I’m just relaying it…
